The Nigerian music industry has always been built on collaboration and community. From the early days of highlife bands to today’s Afrobeats dominance, the most memorable moments often arise when multiple artists come together to create something bigger than themselves. But there’s something extra special when an entire record label brings together all their biggest stars for one massive collaboration.
These all-star anthems serve multiple purposes. They introduce new artists to wider audiences, celebrate the label’s success, and create instant party anthems that define entire eras of Nigerian music. When done right, these collaborations become cultural events that bring people together across the country and beyond.
Nigerian record labels have mastered this art better than most. From the legendary Mo’Hits crew to the modern-day powerhouses like Mavin Records and DMW, Nigerian labels have consistently delivered all-star tracks that get stuck in your head for weeks and become the soundtrack to countless memories. These songs dominate radio stations, pack dance floors, and create viral moments on social media.
Here are five perfect examples of when Nigerian record labels brought their A-game with all-star collaborations that still give us goosebumps today.
“Dorobucci” by Mavin Records (2014)
After the famous Mo’Hits group broke up, Don Jazzy started Mavin Records in May 8, 2012. Two years later, the label dropped their first big collaboration featuring Reekado Banks, Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, Korede Bello, Di’Ja, and D’Prince. Don Jazzy produced the track, and it was basically the artists bragging about their label being the best while praising each other.
This song was Mavin’s way of officially introducing themselves to fans, and it worked perfectly. “Dorobucci” became huge across Africa. People made t-shirts with the word printed on them, and “Dorobucci” became part of everyday slang. Years later, fans still love this song and it gets crowds going crazy at parties.
“Baddest Boy” by EME (2012)
When “Baddest Boy” came out in 2012, it immediately became the hottest song of that time. Even though a leaked version hit the internet before the official release, the song still made massive waves and got nominated for Best Collaboration at the 2013 Headies Awards.
Legendary Beatz produced this track, bringing together Skales, Wizkid, and Banky W. Wizkid and Banky W also contributed to the songwriting, which was the main single from the “Empire Mates State Of Mind” album. The combination of these three artists created pure fire that dominated radio and clubs.
“Booty Call” by Mo’Hits All Stars (2007)
This is easily one of the hottest tracks of its time. Mo’Hits All Stars dropped “Booty Call” in the early 2000s, and it became legendary. The song was track fourteen on their 2007 album “Curriculum Vitae.”
Don Jazzy produced this masterpiece, which featured vocals from D’banj, Dr Sid, D’Prince, K-Switch, and Wande Coal. After this song dropped, everyone realised how incredibly talented Wande Coal was as a singer. His vocals on this track helped launch his career and showcased to the world what he was capable of.
“Our Lord Jesus” by YBNL All Stars (2014)
Released in 2014, “Our Lord Jesus” was one of the most exciting collaborations in Nigerian music that year. Pheelz produced this YBNL hit, which sampled Madame Agnes Iro’s “Follow The Ladder To Heaven.” Olamide led the track and featured fellow YBNL artists Lil Kesh and Viktoh.
Olamide delivered a beautiful, soulful chorus while all three artists dropped incredible rap verses. The combination of the gospel sample with hard-hitting rap created something special that connected with both street and mainstream audiences.
“Mind” by Davido Music Worldwide (2018)
On January 31st, 2018, Davido released this collaboration featuring DMW artists Dremo, Mayorkun, and Peruzzi. The song introduced Peruzzi as the label’s newest signee while showcasing each artist’s star potential.
The track featured a piano-led beat with crashing synths, electronic guitar sounds, and energetic drums. The music video quickly garnered millions of views and contributed significantly to its status as a major 2018 hit. While most of the artists were already successful with Headies nominations and wins, “Mind” gave the whole DMW squad an advantage over their competition.
