- Funke Akindele– We have upgraded our lingo this year thanks to Miss Akindele whose movie ‘Jenifa’ made a mark in Urban Culture this year. The Movie although released in 2008 will still pass as the most popular movie of 2009. Funke Akindele, got endorsements, more fans, awards and bought fleet of cars , but it looks like Miss Akindele will not relent, a new movie Jenifa 2 is her next agenda in 2010, .
- Freestyle- Former Trybesmen rapper Freestyle went AWOL for the better part of 2008 and with a certain black boy’s image looming large over the rap industry in his absence, only an earthquake in 2009 would have made Nigerians notice a Freestyle comeback. And earthquake was exactly what Freestyle caused when a collaboration between himself and American heavyweight T-pain suddenly surfaced on the net and radio stations. However, as the seismic activities abated and the dust settled, the only casualty that was recorded was Freestyle’s reputation as it became apparent eLDee’s former student had simply jacked the song from T-Pain’s collection. Freestyle recently released his own song ‘African Boy’, and it’s not doing too bad.
- Galleria– the Bruce family reawakened the cinema culture in us all and before we knew what was happening, mum, dad, kids, celebrities and even grandmas and grandpas were all trooping to the cinema to see the latest movies in a truly wonderful ambience.
- Gbenga Salu– We didn’t notice when this dude crept on us, but we sure noticed him with the release of Mo hits video “Ten Ten”, and then his enterprising spirit soon got us all talking about him. It was not until long that he started shooting videos for the likes of Lara George and Kenny Saint Brown.. which got him the awards for “The most promising director at the Nigerian Music Video Awards.
- Gbemi Olateru- Olagbegi- Upon announcing that she was leaving Cool FM to return back to school on Monday June 1 2009, a lot of Fans thought that was the last to be heard of Miss Olateru Olagbegi’s already booming career as a radio personality, but the 25 year- old OAP who hosted radio Graffiti on Cool FM took up the 4 pm to 9 pm slot on Beat FM few months after.
- Genevieve Nnaji- Can we call her the Queen of Nollywood? Why not at least Oprah Winfrey recognizes her as one of the people making Nigeria proud. But even though the sultry actress was not on her screen as often as before, she managed to stay in the news for very good reasons this year…..
- Globalcom– The telecoms giant continued its romance with the major faces in the entertainment industry paying them millions of naira to brand the indigenous mobile service provider.
- Google- Who did we visit most in 2009: The Oxford English Dictionary, or Google? How can you best asking?! Google. Of. Course! Next?
- Guilty Pleasures- What you would love about ‘Guilty Pleasures’ is in the finesse of the characters, the subtly un ravelling of the true story, and the absence of unnecessary or unplanned flashbacks like badly patched trousers (see ‘Distance Between’). Moments of anticipation are captured in such flawless perfection; and gosh, Ramsey who has managed to grow above the Nollywood ‘ahs’ and ‘nays’ into a more ‘Hollywoodic’ gesture of expertise launches the movie into realms of fulfilment.
- Grammys- Whichever way you choose to look at it, the Grammies since its debut has somehow found its way into the Nigerian Music Industry, and this is not about 9ice’s usual chant about bringing home. Let’s face it Femi Kuti’s second nomination at the Grammies showed that Nigerians are being appreciated abroad.
- Halloween – There used to be a time when Halloween would simply be labeled ‘witchcraft’ by the average Nigerian. But those days are long gone! Halloween is slowly becoming accepted around the country. Oct 27, 2009 came loaded with a thousand and one Halloween costume parties in Lagos and other major cities.
- Hennessy Artistry- We made so much noise about the Hennessey artistry throughout September 2009, and after many gigs around clubs in Lagos, Chocolate City’s Ice Prince was named overall winner.
- Hip tv- The syndicated TV show, produced by Smooth Promotions, brought a lot of life to TV, when it appeared all hope was lost. This year, the show got on a dozen more stations, entered the UK, and staged an all-white exclusive gig in London to commemorate its second anniversary
- Hi TV- HiTV took their game to the next level in 2009 they delivered Koko Mansion against all odds , overhauled their programming, expanded into other territory and increased their subscribers base
- HHWA- The most authoritative music awards not only moved to the capital city, but also set new standards as has been its tradition since debuting in 2006
- Ibinabo Fiberesima- The former beauty queen will be one of the people who couldn’t wait for 2009 to pass away. Her long-standing manslaughter trial took a new dimension when her initially mild sentencing was revoked and she was jailed for a couple of months before eventually being let off on jail.
- ID Cabasa- ID Cabasa experienced mixed fortunes in 2009, his production services were still very much in demand but he had a few obstacles to overcome. There was the mysterious fire scare that partially damaged some of his studio equipment and then there was the decision to delve into a solo deal with Yes Records. His album ID.entity was met with Critical condemnation.
- I Go Dye- Comedian I Go Dye became one of the most sought- after stand -up acts this year. I Go Dye came correct this year as there was always something to hear from the South South indigene.
- Ikechukwu– Ikechukwu’s final migration to the camp of his longtime friends and collaborators, Mo Hits Records barely made headline news; the real surprise was finding out that he hadn’t already made that move earlier in his career. He lost his father on December 20, 2009
- IK Osakioduwa (Wild Child)- We stopped referring to him as Wild Child last year, but the name still finds a way to crop up somehow. The OAP was host at this year’s BBA not only showed us courage and professionalism but also brought humor on board.
- Illbliss– Finally Illbliss dropped his debut album and oh my, was it worth the wait! Da Thorobred MC may have taken an age to drop Dat Ibo Boy but it was certainly one of the most highly rated of the year and it spawned the mega hit Aiye Po Gan. Ill also tied the knot on May 16, 2009.
- Imma let you finish- Now, with his futuristic fashion sense and wide vagaries in his music, we all knew Kanye West was a trend setter and all, but when he unceremoniously deprived a young Taylor Swift in full acceptance speech mode of her MTV Award moment, he inadvertently gave birth to probably his most unwanted trend yet ‘Imma let you finish’. The moment Mr. West uttered those few words while a helpless Taylor Swift looked on helplessly; he cemented his name in the Hall Of Fame of Celebrity Blooper Infamy
- Ini Edo– Marriage didn’t stop Ini Edo from acting major roles this year. She managed to stay out of trouble for the larger part of 2009, but she still got in the tabloids for rumors about her fallout with different men. Mrs. Ehiagwina was always quick to clarify that her marriage was still intact.
- International Conference Centre Abuja- Still the most prestigious location to host state functions. The arena seats the high and mighty in Africa and indeed the world every year. However, with its multiple halls, the pricey ICC doubles as a very attractive venue to host award shows and generally host gigs where class is paramount.
- International Collaborations- Nigerian music has been on the cusp of an international breakthrough for a long time now. If ever there was a time when renowned artistes in and around Africa saw recording music with their Nigerian contemporaries as more than just a favour and more of a mutual opportunity to expand their brand, it was 2009. Naeto C has arguably been the busiest, working with some of the biggest artistes in Africa including Namibia’s Gal Level. eLDee had a big collaboration with platinum-selling rapper Yung Joc , Wyclef hopped on Suspect’s song and Kennis Music’s Pulse snapped up rap legend Busta Rhymes.
- Inspiration FM- We expected they were going to take over the airwaves after their enormous debut last year, and they sure did, and even though those close to the station have claimed that there is an in house crisis, it has not blown beyond proportion. Well except the Kemistry issue in April
- I-Phone- In this corner, with the sleek black exterior, touch screen everything and weighing in at 135 grams ladies and gentlemen, is the I-Phone 3G and in the other corner well, let’s just say we have other mobile phones. In Nigeria, there seems to be a latent beef between Blackberry and iPhone users, no prizes for guessing who is currently winning that battle at the moment, but the I-Phone still remains widely popular amongst the young and the old.
- I-Tunes- NEWS FLASH! If you don’t have I-Tunes installed on your laptops or computers right now, then you run the risk of being thoroughly outdated before the year runs out. More than just a media player and a tool for sharing music, I Tunes has become the World’s number one online music retailer.
- Iyabo Momoh- Mama Ajasco of the popular sitcom was changed last year for breaking contract rules. But when fans were on the neck of the show producer to bring their favourite act back, death played a fast one by snatching her away in January.
- J.A.J– The meccadon continued from where he stopped last year. Converting radio haters to his side, and maintaining the fan base he has built over the years
- Jay Z- What more can be said about Jay Z, in a year where Mr. Carter celebrated his 40th birthday, it’s only fitting he crowned it with releasing his 11th number one album, Blueprint 3. The album has long gone platinum and is one of the highest selling Hip Hop & R&B albums of the year. Jay also helped produce the Broadway musical Fela!
- Jesse Jagz- If MI broke down the door in 20008, then his younger brother Jesse Jagz certainly waltzed his way through the opening and has firmly established himself as a highly respected artiste in 2009.
- Jim Iyke- The Nollywood bad boy released his debut album “Who am I” in 2009. And even though the album never made it to the streets and stands, his globalcom endorsement got him standing at par or even higher than a number of musicians.
- JJC- Now you see him, now you don’t! JJC is more elusive than an okada in the centre of Abuja on a rainy December day (for those stuck in the analogy, okadas are officially banned in Abuja). Anyway, JJC (or Skillz) has shed the weight of his 419 posse and is making a strong solo return with his high energy, multiple-remixed anthem ‘We are Africans’
- Julius Agwu- Julius Agwu definitely knows what time it is when it comes to comedy, his appearance, countenance and diversity shows it. This year, his annual event “Crack ya Ribs” held in London, Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt
- Jumoke Verissimo- Call her the alpha and omega of book reviews and you won’t be far from the truth. The poet/ novelist sleeps, eats and lives the written word so much that you’ll be tempted to think she was born in a library……………
- J Martins- The last few months couldn’t have possibly gone any better for the producer from the East. Production business is going on fine, just ask Bracket and Kel amongst other satisfied customers. Singing business is going on fine too, just ask his senior brother in Alaba market. In fact, business in general is going on fine, just ask his bank manager and he’ll tell you everything. His second album Elevated received positive reviews
- K Solo– K Solo simply can’t stop making hits even if he was paid to! One blessed day, K Solo decided to check out the view of his studio from behind the microphone rather than remaining on his rather boring producer’s chair. He liked what he saw and recorded a debut album ‘My Way’, which Nigerians seem to like as well
- K1– The king of Fuji music was away for more than three months this year after a major operation to correct complications arising from a collapsed lung, he returned in December to thrill starved fans and well wishers.
- Kanye West– Kanye West, didn’t actually have an album in 2009 but he was always in the news some way or the other. But Kanye did make some music, nabbing 3 Grammy nominations this year and confirming that it would take a little more than a Hennessey induced moment of madness to sink his boat.
- Kefee and Alec- When the lives of entertainers become more entertaining than their music, the resulting drama makes for interesting public viewing. But there’s simply nothing amusing about watching your marriage fall apart while the entire Nation watches with rapt attention.
- Kel- Her debut album The Investment received mostly positive reviews and Kel was the main reason why female emcees were a topic in a year when female Hip Hop in Nigeria showed plenty of promise but ultimately underwhelmed at the end of the day. Kel and her manager Osagie Osarenkhoe have ensured the voluptuous emcee stayed in the public eye in 2009 with numerous public appearances and a coveted slot in the Television Dance Show ‘Celebrity Takes 2’
- Kelly Hansome– In 2008, his monster hit Maga done pay, left us all dancing, and cemented his position as a promising hit maker. But in 2009, he failed to re-enact the kind of buzz he got last year. However, he was able to grab the headlines towards the end of the year by releasing an online diss track directed at Terry G and the Mo Hits crew.
- Kemi Adetiba- She returned this year to the warmth embrace of the media, and got many talking about her barely a month after her return. She joined singer Banky W to compere the Hiphopworld Awards. Then she pitched her tent with Femi Olagbaiye to form Dragonfly productions – their first set of videos are topping the charts already.
- Kemistry – No Kemi Olisaemeka did not release her long anticipated album Kemistry 101. Neither did she tie the knots, but early this year, she was involved in a messy battle with her colleagues at Inspiration FM Foster after which she was allegedly fired. Kemistry threatened to sue the company for damages running up to N100M, and left the country. She returned in November 2009
- Kennis – Nigeria’s foremost record label showed it still has the magic recipe. A year after signing Kelly Hansome, they discovered another talented artiste in Jaywon at the Label’s Easter fiesta held at Kuramo beach. Jaywon has since dropped a debut album to general acceptance. Kennis launched multiple channels on Cable and terrestrial TV, and signed a deal with Ben TV, UK.
- Kenya– Destination for the 2009 edition of the MTV African Music Awards. The East African land of the safari is a major attraction for tourists because of its warm weather, warm people and wild life reserves. Then the election of Barack Obama as America’s 44th president further brought global attention on the country.
- Keri Hilson- Or simply Miss Keri baby! It’s no secret that Beyonce and Rihanna possess the lioness share of the Female Black American Pop music market but if there’s anybody that came close to usurping their throne, it was certainly the Georgia native. Keri defined a unique style and made it her own and then her monster hit ‘Knock you down’ earned two Grammy nominations. Keri Hilson also paid a visit to the Big Brother Africa house and performed in Nigeria.
- Kevin Pam Chuwang – ‘‘I feel like Obama right now’’ were the words that came out of 27 year old Kelvin Pam winner of the $200,000, the biggest prize in the history of Big Brother Africa.

- Kiss Fm Abuja- Not many people gave them a chance to succeed in the murky waters of broadcasting. But they did; adopting the best variety of R&B, Soft Rock, Hip Hop and Classic Soul, the radio station has not only set new standards, they have got the Abuja audience locked down.
- Kizito Egeano- When telecoms company Etisalat came out with the one million dollar promo, we all thought it was a publicity stunt to win more customers until 24 year old Kizito Egeano proved skeptics wrong. The University of Jos undergraduate won the biggest prize money of any promo in the whole of Africa.

Their quest is fast gaining momentum who knows if the statement “DJ take two” will become irrelevant in 2010.
- Lord of Ajasa– Long before spitting in your mother tongue became fashionable; before the likes of 9ice, Dagrin and Nigga Raw grabbed a mic, Lord of Ajasa (gifted lyricist and wordsmith) has been around for God knows when never leaving us all in doubt of his talent. Nice article!!!!!!!!
The WEB is really big enough for us all to fly! lol
I knew a lot would be missing, like others mentioned, where is Mo'chedda, Knighthouse, one management even though several projects they are involved in are mentioned, ramsey noah's co-star in guilty pleasures and rising nollywood actress Nse Etim. Please wake up.
very well compiled big ups to the All You Ever Need In Entertainment team!
Now THAT'S what I call an insightful position on things. What I would advise though is talking to other people involved in the scene and bring to day any different points of view and then update or create a new article for us to stew over. I hope you'll take my ideas, I'm looking forward to it! Try to cover off on some graffiti characters as well if you can, they're everywhere at the moment.
Nice site you have here.
🙂
