- She was born Sandra Smith but later became known as Sandra Iszadore. She however adopted the name Akanke after her meeting with Fela.
- She met Fela in 1969 when the late music legend performed at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.
- Her meeting with Fela changed her life. ‘Meeting Fela was a paradigm shift for me. I had no idea that changing the consciousness of his colonial mentality would dictate the rest of my life, too,’ she once during an interview.
- She was Fela’s teacher and lover. ‘Sandra gave me the education I wanted to know,’ Fela once revealed. I gave him books like the Autobiography of Malcolm X and writings by Angela Davis and Huey Newton. - As Fela’s tour guide and lover, she drove Fela to Disneyland where he got auditioned but wasn’t selected because they weren’t down with his style of music.
- In the course of their romance, Fela wrote the song ‘Upside Down’ for Sandra which she performed in 1976.
- Sandra is an active member of the United States Civil Rights Movement.
- A 2013 LA publication referred to her as the ‘Mother of Afrobeat’.
- In 2012, she released her last album titled Nigeria which features 9ice and Dakore Egbuson.
- She will be speaking at the Fela Debates on the topic, ‘Human Rights as My Property’, alongside other speakers like Ayo Obe, Kunle Ajibade and Chidi Odinkalu.
