Once again, Detty December is upon us, which means parties, festivals, owambe dates, quality time with friends and family, and, of course, Christmas Day itself. It’s kind of a lot, but amid all that festive frenzy, there’s also the fun of carving out a few hours to kick back with a Christmas film.
You’re probably familiar with all the usual staples, so we’re skipping those this year. Instead, we’d like to suggest you check out Nollywood Christmas movies, which are very much a thing (at least two of my colleagues were surprised at this information). They’ve got familiar faces, heartwarming stories and Christmas magic, and we’re sure you’ll love them.
So grab your popcorn/chin-chin/cookies, settle in, and let’s dive into some of Nollywood’s best festive offerings.
Christmas in Miami
We’re starting off the list with an Akpos film. You may already be familiar with Ayo “AY” Makun’s beloved character Akpos, who gets into all kinds of escapades. Christmas in Miami follows Akpos, his father Dafe (Richard Mofe-Damijo), and brother Raphael (Osita Iheme) as they set off for Miami to partake in the Intercontinental Christmas Fiesta, a competition that brings together six families from different countries to compete against each other for the chance to win a cash prize.
In typical Akpos film fashion, there’s lots of shenanigans, but there are also some depth and the celebration of diversity. It’s light fun, perfect if you’re in the mood for a good laugh.

This Very Christmas
This Very Christmas leans into familiar holiday family tension, centring on two estranged brothers, James and Ikenna, whose long-standing feud has quietly shaped the lives of their daughters. Bianca, James’ daughter, and Kathie, Ikenna’s, attend the same school, where Bianca regularly gives Kathie a hard time, a dynamic that mirrors the unresolved issues between their fathers. When the family is forced to spend Christmas under one roof, the atmosphere is predictably uncomfortable, with old grudges and rivalries bubbling to the surface.
This family drama stars Patience Ozokwor as the family matriarch and leans fully into classic Christmas movie territory, reminding us that even the most fractured families can find their way back to each other by the time the holidays are over.

Christmas Is Coming
Christmas Is Coming blends festive cheer with romcom chaos, following tomboy Henri Attah, played by Ufuoma McDermott, whose life takes an unexpected turn thanks to a prank gone slightly too far. On the eve of an important work pitch, and just days before Christmas, her flatmates give her an unplanned makeover that sets off a chain of awkward, often hilarious events. Along the way, Henri finds herself growing closer to her boss, Koko Williams (Deyemi Okanlawon), while also navigating office tension courtesy of a not-so-friendly colleague played by Chioma Akpotha.
It’s sweet, silly, and doesn’t take itself too seriously, making it a solid pick if you like your Christmas movies with a bit of romance and workplace drama thrown in.

A Danfo Christmas
A Danfo Christmas follows Akin and his family as they make a long-overdue trip back to the village for Christmas, prompted by news that the family patriarch (Patrick Doyle) may not have much time left. It’s been a decade since their last visit, and opting to travel by danfo, Akin’s idea, is met with immediate scepticism from his family. Unsurprisingly, the journey is anything but smooth, with a series of mishaps that test everyone’s patience long before they reach their destination.
Things don’t get much easier once they arrive either, as old family tensions resurface, complicated by a difficult mother-in-law, unresolved disappointments, and the looming illness of grandpa.
A Danfo Christmas is a movie that’ll appeal to people who love Christmas movies about family.

A Naija Christmas
Sometimes, a parent or grandparent really wants you to bring home a partner, and occasionally, there’s an incentive involved. That’s the premise of the 2021 film A Naija Christmas, which stars the late Rachel Oniga as family matriarch Agatha, alongside Efe Iwara, Abayomi Alvin and Kunle Remi as her sons Obi, Chike and Ugo. Her ultimatum is simple: whichever son gets married first inherits the family house.
When pressed on timelines, the brothers promise to return with prospective brides by Christmas, setting off a chaotic race against time and each other. What follows is a string of misfires, awkward encounters and romantic mishaps as each brother scrambles to find love, whether genuine or not. Light and funny, it’s an easy watch that leans fully into festive family pressure.

Christmas on a Budget
Christmas on a Budget is an Omoni Oboli film that centres on the Efemena family, a household accustomed to wealth and excess, now facing the very real possibility of a financial crisis just days before Christmas. Patrick Doyle stars as the family patriarch, who quietly tries to manage their money troubles without alerting the rest of the household, especially his spend-happy wife. As he works overtime to keep up appearances, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain the illusion that everything is fine.
For a family that has never known life without money, being forced to scale back their Christmas plans is no small adjustment. What follows is a familiar but effective festive story about reordering priorities, learning restraint, and embracing the notion that Christmas isn’t about how big you do things, but why you do them, and with whom. Rounding out the cast are Ayo Adesanya, Debby Jimmy, Eso Dike, Cynthia Clark, Shaun Okojie, and Ruby Ukedieze.

Christmas Between Worlds
Christmas Between Worlds follows Emeka (Michael Dappa), a young man whose life feels like it’s falling apart on all fronts, from work and finances to his personal relationships. Overwhelmed and running on empty, he has a chance encounter with a man dressed as Santa and makes a simple wish for a better life. He wakes up in an alternate reality where everything has fallen neatly into place, and he’s no longer the struggling version of himself barely getting by. As Emeka tries to make sense of this new world, he meets Kamsi (Omeche Oko), a kind pharmacist he quickly falls for, and their relationship becomes the emotional centre of the film.
Set against the backdrop of Christmas, the story leans into fantasy and romance, offering a feel-good watch that’s sweet, slightly unrealistic, and easy to enjoy.

A Christmas Proposal
A Christmas Proposal stars Daniel Etim Effiong and Ekama Etim Inyang as Dumeje and Anaya, whose paths cross when Anaya begins working as an executive assistant to Dumeje’s mother, operating out of the family home like a regular nine-to-five office. Dumeje is gruff, withdrawn and permanently scowling, shaped by an accident that left him living with a disability and emotionally closed off. A family scare forces him and Anaya into closer proximity, and what starts as reluctant familiarity slowly turns into romance.
As expected, a misunderstanding threatens to derail their budding relationship, turning the final stretch into a race toward reconciliation and a Christmas happily-ever-after. Beyond the romance, the film stands out for placing a character with a disability at its centre, something Nollywood rarely does.

Christmas in Lagos
Christmas in Lagos is a glossy ensemble film by Jade Osiberu that weaves together multiple love stories unfolding during Detty December. As friends return home for the holidays, Fiyin (Teniola Aladese) finds herself determined to finally confess her feelings to her best friend Elo, only to discover he’s come back to Lagos with a girlfriend he’s clearly smitten with. Around her, other romantic threads unfold, including a casual holiday fling involving her friend Ivie, and her mother Gbemi (Shaffy Bello) being torn between her charming ex, Zachariah (Richard Mofe-Damijo), and her current partner, the dependable Toye (Wale Ojo).
With romance, heartbreak and festive chaos all happening at once, the film captures the messiness of love during the holidays, when everyone is home and emotions are running high.

A Merry Christmas Miracle
A Merry Christmas Miracle, a 2024 film by Omoni Oboli, follows Amara (Debby Felix), a struggling single mother doing her best to raise her young daughter, Nneka. Hoping to comfort her child’s longing for a father figure, Amara spins gentle bedtime stories about a fictional “Mr. Joseph” who will one day show up and make their lives easier.
But in a very Christmas-movie twist, mother and daughter soon cross paths with a real Mr. Joseph (Ray Adeka), a single father raising his own daughter, Laura. What unfolds is a tender mix of romance and found family, as the four of them begin to form unexpected bonds that feel like the true gift of the season.
It’s a sweet, hopeful story about second chances, holiday magic and love arriving when you least expect it.
