The album
There’s been a lot of buzz around the almighty compilation album by the newly restructured Chocolate City Group and the fact that I’m a huge fan kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting, anticipating and hoping to be impressed…
To start with, the album is a 15-track body of work that features 13 artistes and 6 producers, which sure looks like a great recipe for great tunes.
So immediately news broke that the album had dropped on Star Music App, I hit the ground, running ASAP to listen to the album over and over again. And it’s safe to conclude that the album is a complete’ body of work with a great mash up and blend of different genres of music.
Jesse Jagz comes correct
The return of Jesse Jagz to Chocolate City has been heralded as one of the best things to happen to the music industry this year, and the honours fell on him to prove if he still has his magic touch as a producer and musician. On the new album, Jesse Jagz features in 4 songs and had his hand in the production of all, and of course they all have the ‘Jarga’ signature touch of quality.
Koker’s the new born star
I first heard of Koker in the 3rd track of M.I Abaga’s The Chairman album in a song titled: ‘Rich’ and he stands out. Again, he reaffirms his unique talent in ‘Do Something’, the second track on this new album and it’s safe to say Choc City now officially has the ‘Next To Blow’ act in its camp.
Koker stands out clearly as the new kid to watch on the album. He features in 3 songs and his signature voice and street style simply makes him unique. The street will definitely love Koker.
Stand out songs
Without taking away anything from the quality, not all the 15 songs will become hits. From a street friendly, critical point of view, Tracks 2 (Do Something), Track 4 (Bass), Track 9 (Love is Calling) and Track 14 (Suite 99) are the stand out tracks from this album.
The album misses Brymo
The album would have been a lot more ‘indestructible’ if it had a Brymo on it. As I listened to the album, I could only imagine a Brymo and Nosa collaboration.
Conclusion
The TICBN album is the 10th official album released by Chocolate City after the label released its first ever album, Jeremiah Gyang’s Na Ba ka in 2005. It’s also the first ever compilation/group album by the label to celebrate its 10th year anniversary and by all standards, it’s a great body of work.
The album shows synergy between all the acts and producers as they collaborated to produce great sounds.
