On Sunday, October 21, 2013, Kenyan president, Uhuru Kenyatta was at the Mashujaa Day celebration where he honoured past heroes/heroines, also launching the Kenya@50 celebration calendar as part of events to mark the country’s jubilee.
At the event held at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi, Kenyatta paid tribute to the country’s heroes and heroines, those who fought painfully for Kenya’s independence including his father, Jomo Kenyatta.
Jomo Kenyatta was the leader of Kenya from independence in 1962 till his death in 1978, serving as prime minister and president.
‘The brutality our independence heroes underwent from October, 20, 1952 until the attainment of self-government ten years later defies imagination. It is the reason that we have reverently emblazoned our national flag with the red of their sacred blood’, he said.
Uhuru Kenyatta further appreciated his people especially the national team to the recent World Athletics Championships in Moscow which won a total of 12 medals.
The republic of Kenya gained independence from Britain on Thursday, December 12, 1963..
