London football club Chelsea FC have won their first ever UEFA Champions League Cup, beating German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich 4-3 on penalties at the Allianz Arena stadium, Germany. And fir this win, they have one man to thank; Ivorian forward, Didier Drogba.
Drogba’s equaliser and winning spot-kick was what ensured the Roberto Di Matteo-led side clinch the title, ending billionaire-owner Roman Abramovich’s nine-year wait since he bought over the club in 2003.
The game, which started without suspended Chelsea skipper John Terry went much of Bayern’s way throughout the first half, with Chelsea making a few decent attempts. However, the second half showed a different side, as both teams went out in search for a goal.
Bayern were rewarded when Thomas Muller found the back of the net with only nine minutes left on the clock. The trophy seemed to have been going the way of the Germans until Drogba, with only two minutes left on the clock, superbly headed home a corner kick.
The draw brought on another 30 minutes of extra time, which saw Bayern’s Dutch winger Ajern Robben failing to convert a penalty which was awarded to his side, after Drogba brought down Frank Ribery.
The tension reached its peak when the match ended with both teams going for penalty kicks. An early miss from Spaniard midfielder Juan Mata set Chelsea back, but two misses from opponents Bayern gave the blues another chance, and once again, Drogba saved the day.
Chelsea’s name has now been engraved on the coveted Champions League Cup as they join other English Premiership teams Manchester United FC and Liverpool FC as cup holders.
The result is however sad news for EPL side Tottenham Hotspurs, who will be demoted to participate in the UEFA Europa League, as Chelsea, who finished sixth, will replace them in next season’s Champions League.
