For a street boy and lover of pop sound, an Asa concert doesn’t quite make one’s to-do list.
But then again, the world knows that Asa makes beautiful world-class music and if one is an entertainment journalist it’s a call of duty one can’t ignore to attend any concert of hers.
So after overcoming many internal struggles, I found myself at Eko Hotel for the first ever Asa concert in Lagos.

It was a beautiful audience (note: audience NOT crowd) and Isaac Gerald did an impressive job as the first performer. He somehow set the mood for the night and we were all hyped.
4 more acts, Falana, Khalil, Bez and Racheal Kerr followed in quick succession and you can’t but appreciate their pure talents, creativity and passion. It was live music (No ‘DJ Track 2’) at it’s best all the way.

At exactly 9:45pm, the host, Olisa Adibua introduced the star of the night, Asa to the stage and the audience went wild for her. She stepped out in her signature glasses, sequin cape dress and she was bare-footed.
Asa’s energy level didn’t drop for a minute. So engaging was it that I watched as virtually everyone sang and danced along to every song she performed especially her hit songs like ‘Jailer, ‘Satan Be Gone’, ‘Fire On the Mountain’, ‘Bibanke’, ‘Maama’. The sound quality was so good you could hear every chord, synth and string.
But then…
Before Asa came on stage the organisers were desperate to have the front row VVIP seats filled up because they planned to record and shoot a DVD and of course the setting had to look good on camera. In their desperation they brought people from VIP and regular seats to fill up the front row seats.

I also noticed that apart from Hennessy, the show had no corporate sponsor! What happened to the banks and telco companies?
Back to the show; Asa was busy gyrating, dabbing, dancing ‘Shoki’ and ‘Bata’ all at once. She also showed off her skills on the trumpet and bass guitar and before we could blink our eyes twice, it was 11:42pm and it all came to an end! Where did all that time go?!

The first ever Asa live concert in Lagos had come and gone as she took a bow with her band members made up of 5 white guys and Janet her back-up vocalist who happens to be the only black girl in her band (haters will call it racism).
