A new statement credited to Sepp Blatter, President of FIFA today has thrown the football world into confusion. Blatter was quoted in a Swiss newspaper, Blick, saying he has not resigned as President of the world football body.
‘I have not resigned. Rather, I have made my mandate available at an extraordinary congress,’ he is quoted to have said.
This is a direct contrast to his widely reported statement a few weeks ago that he would stand down as President of the body due to the negative image FIFA now bears on account of arrest of its top officials and several ongoing investigations.
Precisely on June 2, 2015, Blatter has said: ‘I decided to stand again for election because I thought it was the best option. The election is closed but the challenges have not come to an end. FIFA needs a profound restructuring. Although the members of Fifa have re-elected me president, this mandate does not seem to be supported by everybody in the world of football. This is why I will call an extraordinary congress and step down.’
