A 40-year-old mother of five, Mallama Halima has been arrested by the police for allegedly stealing a one-month-old baby boy from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Hospital Bauchi on Monday, October 15, 2012.
According to DailySun, Mallama told police that she had stolen the child to save her already failing marriage.
While confessing to the crime she explained that she had five female children but her inability to conceive a male had led her husband to divorce her. To regain her matrimonial position, she had gone to the hospital and stolen the baby from his crib.
However, when Mallama’s husband learnt the truth from her, he reportedly forced her to return the stolen child to the hospital where she was apprehended by the police.
Narrating her ordeal, the biological mother of the child Hauwa Mohammed said ‘It was on Monday, October 15, that I discovered that my baby was missing I was sleeping when the nurse on duty came to administer drug on me. I went to the baby’s cot and did not see him. I thought the nurse was attending to him. When I went to meet the nurse on duty, she said the baby was not with her too. And that was when we started looking for the baby.’
Meanwhile, although the nurse on duty was initially arrested, she was cleared following Mallama’s confession that she perpetuated the crime alone.
