An 18-year-old transgender girl showed a lot of courage when she decided to allowed a National Geographic photographer, Lynn Johnson, to capture the moment she underwent surgery to become who she’d always wanted to be – a female.
Emmie Smith, who was born Walker, made the brave decision to enlighten people about what the procedure really requires. The video, released by National Geographic, includes interviews with her identical twin brother, her mom (who happens to be a reverend in an Episcopal church) and surgeon.
The graphic procedure, which captures the transformation of the penis to a vagina, is all round fascinating.
‘The glans penis becomes the clitoris, the skin of the penis becomes the labia minora and part of the opening of the vagina,’ the surgeon explained.
‘The scrotal skin is taken off and used as a skin graft, it’s rolled up into a tube, and that’s placed in a space that we make at the base of the scrotum… and that’s going to be the lining of the vagina. The testicles are removed, and the urethra is actually saved, and the flap of the urethra is used to make a hood for the clitoris.’

Hours later, Emmie is awoken to the news that her surgery has been successful and she grins and checks out her new female parts.

Emmie, who along with her identical twin brother, Caleb, have become one of a very small number of identical male-female twins, says she’s lucky to have a supportive family that has been with her throughout her journey.
