Students of the University of Port Harcourt today took to the streets of the Aluu community and burnt down over 10 houses in reaction to the gruesome murder of four of their colleagues over the weekend.
The students earlier today staged a protest, blocking the roads leading to the community, carrying placards and posters bearing different anti-Aluu inscriptions. According to reports, the students of other institutions under the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) stormed the school and encouraged their colleagues to launch the protest and wreak havoc on the now deserted community.
The school authority has since put on hold, all academic activities to ensure that peace is restored and the case properly investigated. In a similar vein, the Senate headed by David Mark has described the incident as inhuman and called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book and in time too.
Meanwhile, friends of the victims have denied the allegations that they were cultists. In a chat with a radio station in Port Harcourt, colleagues Michael Lestar and Odu Chize, said the four were not only students but maintained a cordial relationship with their colleagues.
We’re told the Police have arrested 12 suspects including the chief of the community for their involvement in the murder.
The four students, Tekena Elkana, Chidiaka Biringa, Ugonna Ibuzor and Michael Lloyd were on Friday, October 5, 2012 murdered by residents of the Aluu community for allegedly stealing a laptop and phone belonging to to an indigene.
