10. Pete’s Dragon
I am probably the only person that ever saw this movie. It was a very random selection from the video club, but I never returned it. Pete’s dragon tells the story of, well, Pete’s dragon. Or at least, a dragon that everyone wanted, but for different reasons. It was fun and colourful and I wish they could remake it!
9. Parent Trap
Now I know some might say, ‘but they remade it already with Lindsay Lohan’. And to that, I say, ‘bah humbug’, or, ‘hian’. The one with Lindsay was a rewrite and it didn’t have the same effect on me that the original had. The original which I’d love to see remade was fun, cute and nostalgic.
8. 7 Brides for 7 Brothers
‘O they say when you marry in June/You’re a bride/for your life’
And every girl suddenly wanted to get married in June! 7 Brides for 7 Brothers was fun to watch, and it was one of those movies you could watch with your parents in the room and not have to cough or look at the ceiling awkwardly for any scene.
7. Mary Poppins
They need to remake this because kids need to know that sometimes, nannies fly, chimneys exist, and sometimes, you’re so speechless that you’re supercalifragilisticexpealadocious.
6. Set It Off
Believe it or not, but Nollywood tried a remake. *sigh* Although it suffered from a bit of overacting, ‘set it off’ was actually a brilliant movie and it would be nice to see a modern take.
5. The Hubert Ogunde movie I can’t seem to get the title of.
It’s amazing how noone seems to know (the title of) this movie, not even google.
But it had a forest, a woman, some branding on her forehead, and a snake. Hubert Ogunde movies and plays in general should be made into movies as we continue to tell our stories with our own voices. It is important not to neglect these early movies and not to forget that people made movies in the 70s too!!!
4. The L Word
Inspite of rumours of a movie (as usually happens when a series with a cult following airs its’ final season), there has still been no casting nor announcement as to a movie.
The series ended a with a lot of unanswered questions and unresolved issues and a movie would help.
3. Friends
Watching the re-runs reminded me just how good a series this was, and how excellent the writing was, and how good the acting was and why it ran as long as it did and became as popular as it did.
Everyone needs ‘Friends’ and while we may not get them back in a series, a nice movie would help. Chandler and Monica with a kid or two, Ross and Rachel off again but maybe on, Phoebe being Phoebe and Joey being Joey. Come on!
2. Sounds of Music
Okay so this one is dicey.
The danger is, they would either tweak it too much, or not well enough. However, one of the best musicals in history deserves an interpretation suitable for today.
1. Grease
‘High School Musical‘ tried unsuccessfully to be the modern day Grease, but you can only have a modern day Grease, by having a modern day Grease!
The same songs, a different cast, and revamped dance moves. But essentially the same. So, which movies would you like to see re-made, and which series would you like to see a movie follow-up for? Let me know!
