While government officials continue to promise to bring down the cost of rice – obviously the staple food of millions of Nigerians, there’s an epidemic of plastic pellets being sold as actual rice and it doesn’t seem to be abating.
For a few months now, there have been reports of people cooking what they thought was rice but turned out to be plastic.
Every week, a new video like the one above gets shared by people across the nation and it seems that it’s not getting enough attention from either the mass media or more importantly, the government.
Nigeria spends over $6m (almost N3b) annually on importing shiploads of rice, with most of these consignments are from Vietnam, Thailand and China.
Videos have appeared on the Internet showing the fake rice being produced in those countries.
Nigeria is notorious for having lax borders and it’s no surprise that these things continually find their way into the country, posing a serious risk to millions of Nigerians who eat rice every day.
