Tacha Akide, Mike Edwards, Atiku Abubakar, Feyikemi Abudu, Ibidunni Ighodalo, and Mercy Eke are in contention for the award of Most Popular Person at the 2021 edition of the NET Honours People’s Choice Awards, one of the world’s biggest audience data-based awards.
NET Honours is an annual recognition of top performers in the entertainment industry and public sector based on audience data from ID Africa’s media channels. NET Honours recognises achievers through a thorough analysis of audience search results, consumer interest, social media interactions and trends. The award is based on engagement from over 8 million internet users reached across websites, social media and related channels of Netng, Neusroom, 234Star and Orin between June 2020 and May 2021.
For the category of Most Popular People, NET Honours took into account the personalities who were subjects of exciting conversations and whose names attracted much engagement on Netng and its associated platforms during the year in review.
Mike Edwards, who emerged the first runner up at Big Brother Naija: Pepper Dem, actively participated in October 2020’s #EndSARS protests. His reality show, “Mike and Perri”, aired on MTV, and in March 2021, he was unveiled as the host for the Budweiser Smooth Kings Remix show.
Atiku Abubakar, former Vice-president of Nigeria and presidential aspirant in the 2019 general elections, has frequently spoken out in opposition to the economic and social policies of the current administration. In September 2020, he criticised the government for its decision to increase electricity tariffs, and in October 2020, he publicly condemned the shooting of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate.
Mercy Eke, who emerged winner at Big Brother Naija: Pepper Dem, succeeded in staying relevant during the year in review. She focused on her real estate business at Lambo Homes, and in September 2020, she bought herself a Range Rover for her 27th birthday. She was also one of the keynote speakers at the eighth edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference (#NECLive), Nigeria’s biggest gathering of entertainment practitioners.
Feyikemi Abudu worked closely with the Feminist Coalition (FemCO) to distribute food and logistics during the #EndSARS protests of October 2020. She also worked hard to secure the release of protesters unlawfully arrested, and she was profiled by Netng as one of the women leading the #EndSARS revolution.
Before her death on June 14, 2020, Ibidunni Ighodalo was an event management expert, philanthropist, and co-pastor of Trinity House Church. Her foundation, the Ibidunni Ighodalo Foundation, focused on supporting families with fertility challenges. She was also the brain behind the fantastic Christmas decorations around Lagos for years. She was included in the Neusroom 100, helping the world fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tacha Akide was a controversial figure in Big Brother Naija: Pepper Dem, but somehow she endeared herself to many fans. She was disqualified nine days to the end of the show but has since become one of Nigeria’s most prominent influencers and emerged as the Most Popular BBNaija Star in the NET Honours Class of 2020.
Data for NET Honours is sourced from a vast database of over eight million users who engaged with Netng, Neusroom, Orin and 234Star platforms via the websites, social media accounts, and related platforms within a 12-month calendar period.
