Sunny Neji calls his brand of music Pop Afrik, a mix of contemporary highlife, pop and a tinge of R&B. His latest album Timeless represents that. 15 tracks deep, Timeless is a collection of songs that reveals a singer who is content in his own lane. The album moves at a comfortable pace and steady rhythm.
The album starts with ‘Inside pass body’, a track which advises women to be satisfied with their physical appearance and their true beauty, which lies within. ‘Inside pass body’ is a good starter which reveals the strength of Timeless; Sunny Neji’s melodious voice. With easy going lyrics, Neji uses this asset to push his songs like ‘Shout’ where he sings ‘Your love be like food o, wey dey take time to cook. E be like beautiful picture wey I like to look. If you give me overdose e no go worry me. With you I like to pose, make everybody see’.
Another good track off the album is ‘Talk’- a song about the importance of two lovers communicating. ‘Communication will set us free that is the reason why I am not a tree’ croons the singer, which sees the combination of his voice and its melody working effectively. ‘Red wine’ sounds like the lead single of the LP, a party track for the grown and sexy, who appreciate wine and the good life. ‘Nobi oyinbo’ featuring the songstress Kiki, is Sunny Neji’s conscious track. The message that he tries to pass across is we shouldn’t blame the white man for all our problems.
Sunny Neji remixes ‘Mr Fantastik’, increasing the highlife factor of his 1997 hit single thanks to the twangs of an electric guitar. With the guitar playing, the song has a feel of the highlife tracks prominent in the 70’s from Eastern Nigeria. On ‘One more time’, Neji begs his lover to give ‘it’ to him one more time, ‘it’ being carnal pleasure and food. While most of Sunny Neji’s songs are not intended for Nigeria’s pop radio, which seems to have a young demographic, a song like ‘Lovey dovey’ talks about cyber based romance and relationships, which are prevalent today.
Timeless is a good LP, the only thing that hinders it from being great is the fact that it does not take it up another notch. Songs like ‘Oruka’ and ‘Mr Fantastik’ are not on this album, leaving Timeless without diamonds to show off. The tracks on this album gleam, but they do not shine. The set moves at an even space with no grand moments. It is a steady album with no extremes- high or low. It is a confident album that gets the job done with little or no fuss. Timeless won’t get your pulse racing but it will have you swinging your hips.
