With so many perfumes on the market, and new ones being launched all the time (Kim Kardashian, I’m looking at you) – it’s no easy task finding the right perfume. How do you go about finding a gorgeous fragrance that makes you feel good, leaves a delectable aroma trailing behind you and prompts the repeated question ‘What perfume are you wearing?’
A few years ago, I was educated on the importance of knowing my perfume personality so I can always pick the right scents for me. There are many factors to consider, but knowing the essentials of the perfume ‘families’ and considering your own personality, along with the aura you wish to create, can guide you towards fragrance heaven, both for yourself and for those around you!
Perfumes fall into several categories; knowing what they are is an important first step in choosing your perfume. Categories include:
Floral: Floaty and feminine, these perfumes contain the perfume of one — or sometimes — several flowers
Oriental: Rich and slightly spicy, typical ingredients include cinnamon and vanilla
Green: Fresh scents characteristic of the outdoors, evoking freshly-cut grass and leaves
Wood: Musky fragrances of pine, sandalwood and cedar
Now let’s see which perfume personality you have.
Vintage Fragrances
For some reason, I have an affinity for older fragrances, for example, Chanel no 5 (gosh, that perfume has been around since forever!), Classic and chic scents.
Fresh and Natural
Natural, fresh scents are probably the most appealing. Natural and fresh-smelling fragrances contain mostly natural ingredients, such as organic flowers, fruits and wild-harvested greens. It is happy, airy, sexy, confident and as fresh as spring. Scents like these can change depending on body chemistry, often smelling quite different from person to person.
The Classic Romantic
Floral notes are timeless, feminine and romantic. This perfume personality can enhance feelings, emotions and the sentimental side, where sweetness, elegance and class will be among the facets you exude. Reserved women who enjoy solitude and tranquility tend to prefer this heavy sweetness, which may even lead to dating and love. Gucci Envy scent is a perfect example.
Romantic perfumes will awake feelings of love and affection. From the strongest fragrance to the most subtle, the one you’ll wear will simply overshadow others and make them feel gorgeous with you.
Sweet and Tasty
Sweet and candy-ish perfume scents bring innocence to mind. It’s something with a sweet base that’s blended with other ingredients so lovable and inviting.
The simple sweet and tasty fragrance that is often a combination of a sugared blend of fruit, flowers and candies, coffee and marshmallows, is for those who wish to exude an innocent, homely, young and sweet personality. If you wear this scent, you are bringing back the excitement of younger years, changing seasons and good times.
The Sexy Idealist
This fragrance is called the modern perfume personality. The blend of florals and spices offer a kick of spicy notes, carrying both sweet and happy-go-lucky attitudes. Intoxicating and addictive, with this zesty fragrance, you’re exuding a truly sexy, deep and sensual burst unlike any other. It has excellent longevity with a distinctive and excellent fragrance. There is nothing like brightening up the mood everywhere you go.
The Trendsetter
This personality exudes self-assurance. Citrus notes have taken the place of “florientals.” This offers the fragrance from woodsy-mossy to citrus, sometimes with masculine notes such as the mixture of woods, moss, oak, and flowers, which lean towards a fruity or leathery combination, usually exotic, slightly dry and not very sweet.
These notes are usually strong, which many find ideal for cooler evenings and warm outdoors.
Some Perfume tips to help
1. Pour Femme – is French which translates to ‘for women’
2. Cologne does not necessarily mean for men. Eau de Cologne actually means the fragrance contains about 3 to 8% fragrant extracts and the rest is filler, like alcohol.
3. Women’s fragrances can be stronger as Eau de Parfum, or lighter, as Eau de Toilette.
4. Layering scents means using the same notes for body wash, lotion and fragrance. This is usually done to make the scent last longer.
If you are like some women, you may also like using one as your ‘signature scent.’ For Anne Hathaway, it is Chanel Chance (well, it was the last time I read about her). I’d say mine is Givenchy’s Very Irresistible. What’s yours?
The most important thing is for you to identify a scent that makes you smell and feel good, and stick with it.
