Serena Williams defeated rival, Maria Sharapova to win her first French Open championship since 2002.
CNN reports that the self-proclaimed, ‘hardest working woman in tennis’ won by a 6-4, 6-4 victory in an almost 2hour match to clinch her 16th grand slam crown.
‘Eleven years,’ Williams said in French during the trophy ceremony. ‘I think it’s unbelievable. Now I have 16 Grand Slam titles. It’s difficult for me to speak because I’m so excited.’
At 31 years, she is oldest woman in the Open Era to win the French Open title, the previous mark held by Chris Evert since 1986.
