Saudi Arabia may be a conservative country where women has to cover their faces, but it sure loves its camels. The camels are so beloved that a beauty pageant is being organized for them. At the Mazayen al-ibl Festival later this month, more than 300,000 camels will be participating in the beauty paegent and the most beautiful of them all will win a £25 million grand prize.
According to the organizers, contestants are required to have ‘natural beauty, curly hair, pert ears, long lashes and a nice hump’.
The annual national festival is part of the Arab country’s move to retain old traditional practices in the modern world.
Camels are valuable animals in the desert region and can be very pricey. A 2016 BBC report put the starting cost of camels at £40,000. At six hundred naira to one pound sterling, that’s twenty four million naira- enough money to buy a luxury car.
