Chelsea’s record signing, Alvaro Morata had a cameo to forget as he missed one of the spot kicks in the 4-1 loss to Arsenal in the FA Community Shield.
The match played at Wembley between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners saw Nigeria’s Victor Moses put Chelsea in front after 46 minutes.
But things started taking a turn for the worse when Pedro got a straight red card in the 80th minute after a bad tackle on Mohamed Elneny.
As it turned out, Arsenal equalised from the resulting free-kick a minute later, new signing Sead Kolasinac heading in Granit Xhaka‘s ball in.
Afterwards, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois skied Chelsea’s second penalty before Morata shot his spot kick wide.
Arsenal meanwhile scored all four penalty kicks to win the shoot-out 4-1 and win the Community Shield.
It is the third time in four years the Gunners have won the Community Shield, with two of the three wins coming against Chelsea.
The match serves as the curtain-raiser to the Premier League season, which starts on Friday, August 11 with Arsenal hosting Leicester City.
