Contrary to widely reported claims that Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw-Nuttal was assaulted and injured at the protest held at the Lekki toll gate yesterday, Saturday, December 17, 2011, the actress says she wasn’t hurt.
The National Mirror and other news outlets had reported that Henshaw-Nuttal and a handful of other residents of the Lekki, Ajah and Epe axis of Lagos State came out to protest over plans by the state government to begin collection of tolls on the newly constructed Lekki-Epe Expressway.
But Henshaw-Nuttal in a telephone conversation with Nigerian Entertainment Today confirmed that she was present but she was never assaulted. ‘Things got rough when the Police came and there was a scuffle between them (Police) and us but I was not harmed’.
She went on to tell of how a young man’s head was allegedly cracked open by the Policemen after they mistook him for someone who had damaged their vehicle’s windshield. Tear gas was let loose into the crowd to ensure them dispersing.
Reports say about 27 people have been allegedly detained by the police and one feared dead.
‘If we are all thinking about safety then we will be quiet forever. If Mandela was thinking about safety then Jacob Zuma won’t be there now. If you don’t stand up for something, you’ll fall for anything. I’m not doing this for myself; I’m doing it for my children. They can’t just throw things our way and have us take it like that’.
