- Obi says he wishes Kuti a ‘long and successful career’
One would wonder why the names Seun Kuti and Obi Asika would even come up in the same sentence; well no thanks to a recent war of words between the Afrobeat singer and the Storm Records boss.
The brouhaha began on Twitter when Obi Asika reacted to Kut’si comments on African music.
On Tuesday, April 10, Seun Kuti in a radio interview with Society Hae, a digital media company based in New York said ‘we should be supporting African music, not African musicians that are trying to sound European’.
Obi Asika seeing Society Hae tweet Kuti’s comments immediately replied ‘support good music period wherever it comes from and don’t restrict the choices and tastes of urban African youth!’
Seun Kuti, obviously upset by the comment took to his Facebook account a day later to reply Obi Asika.
‘Mr Obi Asika. Stop chatting shit bout me on twitter I an entitled to my opinion and if u got beef see me when u see me bitch! I didn’t name no one so if u feel like its ur artiste then u knw u making bubble gum music’.
Seun Kuti is the last son of Afrobeat founder Fela Kuti. Interestingly, although he leads his father’s Egypt 80 band and performs regularly at festivals all over the world, the young Kuti is a hip hop apostle and an enthusiast of urbane culture.
In a mature response to Kuti’s outburst, Obi Asika who’s a hip hop veteran and respected head, tells NET he has ‘no comment’ to make on Kuti’s obviously upsetting statement.
‘I have no comment except to say that I wish Seun a long and successful career, Asika told Net in an E-mail correspondence.
