Nuttin’ Wrong With L’Ami!

Okay so, I wasn’t exactly top of my class in French (…shoot me!) but at least I can remember the word ‘Ami’ is French for friend and that that sophisticated looking ‘L’ at the beginning is nothing more than an identifier. Having said that, kindly allow me to introduce you to somebody who I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t mind being friends with, her name’s L’Ami Phillips.

 Okay so I have another confession to make, I admit I don’t know how much French language played a role in Ms. Phillips choice of L‘Ami as pseudonym but just like her name, L’Ami’s style of music is very unique. In the video for only her second single Nuttin, L’Ami rides IKON’s aggressive high tempo beat with the kind of expertise that makes it hard to believe that she’s a relative novice in the game.

The video starts off with L’Ami sporting a shirt that boldly declares the young lady’s love for achabas (as the Hausas call it) or okada (as the rest of Nigeria does) but if you believed the top half of the shirt without paying attention to the massive NOT engraved underneath, you would be terribly misguided. A bit like her tee shirt, L’Ami’s music is a little subtle in delivering its message of hope and motivation. Many conscious-minded artistes make the mistake of sacrificing style at the altar of substance; thankfully L’Ami  isn’t one of them.

 As the video unfolds, L’Ami unravels from her tee shirt into something a lot more daring to expose a little more décolletage (that’s French for cleavage , told you my French was on point), but hey we are not exactly complaining now are we gentlemen? The colour – rich video was directed by the fast-rising AK One and was shot somewhere in Lagos. It features cameos by Banky W, Sound Sultan, M.I and IKON himself.

L’Ami’s debut album Intuition is due for release this month
