Homosexuality has become a trendy lifestyle in many parts of the world. The idea of having a sexual relationship with someone of the same sex has become fashionable. I have loosely used the words ‘fashionable’ and ‘trendy’ here since it hasn’t been proven scientifically that nature allows such preferences. This is definitely a no- judgement zone but I still harbour an opinion. When I was ruminating over this very sensitive issue, I realised one thing: One can never do a completely unbiased piece on homosexuality. I would therefore make an effort.
Both citizens and certain governments of the world have strong opinions for or against homosexuality. Most African governments have risen to condemn homosexuality. From laws prohibiting being gay to decrees stipulating stiff penalties to homosexuals, many African countries have definitely taken a stand against this lifestyle. Does this move spell marginalisation?
Is it right for anyone to be prosecuted and persecuted based on their sexual preferences? Is it worth wasting tax payer’s money on? The irony of this is that gayness, at least among men is fairly obvious, yet claiming this lifestyle openly becomes another ball game. Ask to be married to your gay partner, you expose yourself. This is the case even in Nigeria. Just as the repealed ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ law in the United States Army, homosexuals in Africa believe they are who they are but living openly with this decision make them targets of persecution.
Recently, the United States Congress rendered null and void the law prohibiting gay members of the country’s army from getting married. This came on the heels of the legislators of the state of New York passing the law for same- sex marriages to be legalised in that state. Jubilant cheers erupted all over America and once again, they saw themselves as progressive. Despite the seeming advancement, only six out of the fifty states in that country have a smile to give to gays. By the way, America is the most powerful nation in the world.
Back here in Africa, countries like Uganda and Zimbabwe have made same- sex relationships an offence punishable by death. The law invariably states: ‘If u know a gay, drag him out and execute him’. Granted these countries’ laws do not state that categorically, but deduction could also work here.
Few weeks ago, here in Nigeria, the ‘Same Gender Marriage (Prohibition) Bill’ passed second reading at the National Assembly, meaning this will soon be passed into law. The law, aimed at punishing gays and lesbians was sponsored by Senator Domingo Obende (ACN, Edo North). Chasing shadows, that is what this attempt should be called. If any Nigerian is asked to prioritise his needs today, gay marriage would not even make the list.
Homosexuality is one of the most sensitive issues worldwide; right behind religious terrorism and racism. The hypocrisy surrounding it is also worldwide. For those who do not like to discuss homosexuality because of claims of apathy, it is time be honest with yourselves and everyone else. The heart only knows what the heart thinks. Pick a side.

I am a Christian. So, I react from the angle of Christianity. Proverbs 14:34 says “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people”. Same sex relationship is not only sinful religiously but also culturally an abomination. Is that the only sin? one may ask. And St. James answered in Chapter 2:10 “And the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as the person who has broken all of God’s laws”. I am sure that Islamic laws does not support this equally.
Think of dogs, goats and others which we take as lesser animal. They use discretion in expressing their sexual urge. They know when they are sexually aroused to look out for opposite sex and not same sex. Why do we claim superiority over these creations whereas we are the inferior by all our attitudes. Why can’t we display our freedom to behaviour or attitude with a sense of dignity.
Yes, “the ‘Same Gender Marriage (Prohibition) Bill’” or gay marriage may not make the list if any Nigerian is asked to prioritize his needs today but I beg to differ. If we the citizens do the right things preached by our different religious groups, God will look down on us with mercy. We have had cases of bad governance in the bible where God punished leaders who refuse to acknowledge his supremacy. NEBUCHADNEZZAR is one of them. Therefore, both the different arms of Government and the citizens should seek righteousness and God will exalt us.
“If any Nigerian is asked to prioritise his needs today, gay marriage would not even make the list.”
This at the moment cancels out the chance of considering the issue.
Gay marrage is a SIN. Islamic comdemed It. The Bible in leviticus 20 vs 13 is against It. Lets hav D FEAR OF GOD IN US.
The day Nigeria as a country accepts homosexualism/lesbianism as a way of life and legalizes it, that is when we will truly know what the wrath of the Almighty GOD is like. Let just do our best to remain a righteous nation. God loves Nigeria.
I dont think we need to debate this. I beg n’assembly should quickly pass d bill against it & be signed in 2 law with immediate effect.
