Nigeria’s Super Falcons have won the 2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon following a 1-0 win over the host nation in the final played today in Yaounde.
Following a goalless first half dominated by Cameroon, the game looked destined to end without a goal until Desire Oparanozie got the winner six minutes from time.
The goal stunned the 40,000-capacity Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, which had Cameroon president Paul Biya in the stands, to silence as Nigeria held on to retain the continental crown they won two years ago in Namibia.
That time, Nigeria also beat Cameroon to the title, and this latest triumph makes it the eighth time the Super Falcons have won the title; 10th if you count the wins in 1991 and 1995 before the competition was changed to the Africa Women’s Championship.
For Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses, they will have to wait two more years to have a shot at a first title after finishing as runners-up a third time in the competition’s history.
Meanwhile, Ghana, the hosts of the next edition of the AWCON in 2018, finished in third place after pipping South Africa 1-0 in the third place play-off.
