Bride Price: Money or property given (in some societies) by the bridegroom to the family of his bride.
Nigerians on social media are currently going crazy over a newly created ‘bride price’ app that apparently calculates how much a Nigerian woman’s worth is.
You don’t need to be a social media expert to use the app. Recently launched on brideprice.com.ng, it lets you pick answers from a set of options presented in several categories.
Some of the categories include – Height, Weight, Leg Shape, Facial Beauty, Skin Colour to others like Residency, Nationality, Cooking Skills and Accent. The options are quite hilarious!
Many women who have tried out the app, have posted their personal results on Instagram and Twitter, and it’s currently trending in Nigeria.
However, some people say the app comes off as sexist and only portrays women as objects, while others have asked, is collecting ‘bride price’ a myth? No.
The developers of the app have a word for everyone on the disclaimer page, though; ‘We are responsible for optimal performance of this app, but we are not responsible for what you do with it. This app is a joke, and all there is to it‘.
So ladies, go ahead; calculate yours and don’t forget to tell us how much you are worth!
