Two of the slain University of Port Harcourt students Llyod Michael (Big L) and Ugonna Ibuzor (Tipsy) have left us a classic memorable four minutes song to always remember them with; along with the two other slain students, Chidiaka Biringa and Tekena Elkanah.
Titled ‘Heart of the city‘, the song is a remix of the 1974 R&B song ‘Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City‘, performed by Michael Price and Dan Walsh. The song became very popular in 2001 when Kanye West recreated a Hip-hop version for rapper Jay Z on his ‘The Blueprint‘ as a tribute to the city of New York.
The song was recently remixed by Nigerian rapper M.I with rap duo Show Dem Camp on his ‘Illegal Music‘ mixtape as a tribute to the city of Lagos.
Big L and Tipsy with the help of female vocalist Yetty took it upon themselves to create a tribute to the city of Port Harcourt, where they were eventually killed.
‘Growing up in a city like PH where wrong was made to seem right/we embraced the street life/cos there’s no love in the heart of the city/ how can the seeds grow if the garden is weary?/’, Big L delivers some touching lines.
May their souls rest in peace.
