NETPod: ‘I Go Go’ – Omawumi

The MD of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – Dominique Strauss-Kahn is currently being detained in a New York prison on charges of sexually assaulting a maid in his swanky hotel room. However, in an interesting twist to the tale, Dominique’s wife of 20 years, Anne Sinclair has stood strongly behind her man, declaring that despite the fact that the IMF boss has a short history of such allegations being leveled against him and even before all the evidence in this particular case have been placed before her, that her darling husband is innocent of any wrongdoing.

Hogwash! Omawumi’s man will not be getting off that easy, the assertive ‘Waffi’ babe will have none of that; once feelings walk out the door in her relationship, she’s going right off with them. On I Go Go, the second single off her second studio album, Oma makes a subtle threat to her lover ‘no be by force if e tire you, just let me pack and go’. Over a harmonic reggae-inspired instrumental, the West African Idols alumnus showcases her versatility, expertly putting together words in a combination of proper English and believable pidgin and managing to deliver both powerfully in a way she has made her own over time.

We may only be two singles into it but Omawumi’s new album is shaping up to be quite the memorable listen her last album Wonder Woman quite honestly fell short of.
