Fans waited to hear Adele’s name get called at Madison Square Garden during the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, as Beyoncé and Rihanna shone on stage.
The ‘Hello’ singer, who was nominated in eight categories, however missed out on an award as organisers announced winners of all 17 categories at this year’s ceremony.
Here’s why we think Adele’s ‘Hello’ deserved the ‘Video of the Year’ nod over Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’:
‘Hello’ was the most nominated video, appearing in seven categories, but it’s sad that Adele wasn’t called from the other side during the ceremony.
Beyonce’s ‘Formation’ video, off her visual album Lemonade, was released in February 2016.

The video, directed by Melina Matsoukas, received diverse reactions for its alleged anti-police carriage which Queen Bey denied, while others praised the portrayal of African-Americans in it.
With Bey’s ‘Formation’ performance during Super Bowl 50 half-time show and her ‘Formation World Tour’, the video has only gathered less than 15m Vevo views.
The lead single off Adele’s comeback album 25, released in October 2016 and directed by Canadian actor and director Xavier Dolan, on its part reached the record of 27.7m views in its first 24 hours on Vevo.
And it went on to break Miley Cyrus‘ ‘Wrecking Ball’ record for the fastest video to reach 100 million views in five days.
At the moment, the video has become the sixth most viewed video on YouTube having earned over 1.6b Vevo views.
‘Hello’ has also become the third video on YouTube to get 10m likes, attained on May 29, 2016. The only other two videos to have over 10m likes are Psy‘s ‘Gangnam Style’ and Wiz Khalifa‘s ‘See You Again’.
These go to show the video was very well received, more so as it was able to get the organisers to nominate it in seven categories.
Stars who have previously won the Video of the Year award multiple times at the VMAs include Eminem (‘The Real Slim Shady’ and ‘Without Me’), Rihanna (‘Umbrella’ and ‘We Found Love’) and now Beyoncé (‘Single Ladies’ and ‘Formation’).
