Host nation of the 2015 African Cup of Nations, Morocco has urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to postpone the tournament over fears of Ebola virus affecting the country.
With the 2015 AFCON scheduled to run between Saturday, January 17, 2014 to Sunday, February 8, 2014, a statement from Morocco’s sports ministry reads:
‘Morocco maintains its request to postpone the CAN 2015 to January 2016.
‘The decision is dictated by health reasons because of the serious threat of Ebola and the risk of its spreading.’
However, with speculations linking the previous host nations, South Africa and Ghana to take over the hosting rights from Morocco, both countries have come out to say they are not prepared to host the African Cup of Nations in January due to the sudden notice.
Officials of CAF are now to meet on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, to decide the next steps and decide which country, if any, is prepared to host the tournament.
The tournaments involves 16 nations from one confederation, who come together to battle to be the African Champions.
