Michael Sam makes history as being the first NFL player to publicly declare he is gay. The former Missouri football player took the load off his chest on February 9, 2014 when he spoke out.
‘I am an openly, proud gay man’, brave Michael said, revealing that his Missouri coaches and teammates have known since August 2013.
Michael, who plays as a defensive lineman, is entering the 2014 NFL draft and will possibly be drafted.
‘I understand how big this is. It’s a big deal. No one has done this before. And it’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be… I want to be a football player in the NFL’, Sam, 24, explained.
‘I didn’t realize how many people actually knew, and I was afraid that someone would tell or leak something out about me. I want to own my truth. … No one else should tell my story but me.’
NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello wrote on Twitter, supporting Sam coming out of the closet.
UPDATE
Sam is waiting for the official draft list before he can play in the NFL.
