South African national hero and former leader Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela is 94 today.
Nearly 12 million children across South Africa kicked off celebrations to honour Mandela who spent the day quietly with his family in his South-Eastern birth Village of Qunu.
US president Barrack Obama gave an early tribute saying ‘Mandela has changed the arc of history, transforming his country, the continent and the world’.
Mandela, a politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, is the first ever to be elected in a fully representative democratic election in South Africa.
