Manchester Police officials have been invited to investigate the incident of racial abuse directed at Manchester City player, Yaya Toure.
The Ivory Coast midfielder had reactivated his Twitter account on Monday, November 3, 2014 after abandoning it five months ago so as to stay focused on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. On tweeting to reflect the derby win over Manchester United, he received abusive and alleged racist messages from a number of Twitter accounts.
Speaking recently with BBC Sport, the player criticised the act saying: ‘For me, it’s a disgrace to be honest, ‘we need to do something to try to tell people those kinds of behaviour have to stop. I want those people to understand what they’re doing is wrong.’
A spokesperson of anti-racism campaigners, ‘Kick It Out’ in a statement, also confirmed that the situation has been reported to the police to investigate the issue.
‘At this stage we have received complaints about two separate tweets of a racist nature aimed at Yaya Toure and now we are informing the police,’ the statement said.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time the former Barcelona player has been involved in racial abuse, he was subjected to racist chanting during Manchester City’s Champions League game at CSKA Moscow in 2013.
