The Rio Olympics ended on August 21, 2016 and just a little over six months from that day, the multi-million dollar venues used for the Games now lie in varying states of disrepair and ruin.
The flagship Maracana Stadium that played host to the glamorous opening and closing ceremonies has since been vandalised and authorities say the stadium owes $1m in electricity bills.

The protests before the Games now seems justified as Brazilians railed against hosting it, claiming that the country was too broke to host such a capital intensive event. The Games started barely after construction ended.

Right now, most of the amenities are rotting away and the city is in debt to the tune of $40m.
As a result, state workers have not been paid in months and crime has risen in the favelas (communities).
All that has taken toll on the brand new facilities and are quickly being destroyed due to theft or abandonment.
The Olympic Village was expected to fetch revenue but only 260 of the 3,604 apartments have been sold till date.

With the exception of London in 2012, Olympic cities since 2004 have found it difficult to maintain the facilities once the games are over.
Both Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008) have witnessed decay in the Olympic arenas but Rio’s decline in this short time is a record.
