The third edition of Fuji Vibration created by Bobo Omotayo was an energetic night for industry titans, media moguls, tech entrepreneurs, visual artists, socialites, technocrats, influencers, Fuji music aficionados, and everyone who gather at Muri Okunola Park, Lagos to enjoy the best of Fuji music on December 8, 2022.
Hosted by Jide Taiwo, the show began with praises for the Fuji music industry and all those who have contributed to the success of the music genre. With an impressive lineup of musical acts, the Queen of Fuji, Yeye Eniba put up a commanding performance that showed her vocal prowess and dance moves which set the audience up for an exciting night.
Up next was Omo Aje Wasiu, one of King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall’s (KWAM1) many protégés. His mastery of the stage and calm vocal performance set him apart and earn him accolades from the diverse audience present at Fuji Vibration.
Ten-year-old Agba Awo Fuji also took full ownership of the stage with his band which consisted of backup vocalists of his age. His quick rise to fame and the credibility of his act attested to the influence of Fuji music on young people and the genre’s long longevity.
Awo Agba Fuji won the surprise performing act Instagram poll held by the Fuji: A Opera team to choose the final act for Fuji Vibrations.
The show got even hotter with The Maze Xtreme, a masked DJ duo that served up the Fuji sound via heart-pounding Electronic Dance Music (EDM) loops. Last year, they were the surprise act but this year, they earned their invitation by getting the guests up and dancing to familiar songs mixed with EDM for a sonic cocktail.
Sefiu Alao, also known as ‘Baba Oko’, delivered a memorable performance. His lyrics were heartfelt, illustrative, and singable, and his performance conveyed wise sayings, philosophy, vulnerability, and observations from daily life.
Then there was Taye Currency, the legend who understood how to get a crowd dancing. To the teeming audience, his songs were as familiar as a door knock. They yelled, jumped, and screamed. He feigned surprise at the crowd’s recognition of him, and then he dish out songs after songs. As he performed, he walked down the stage, shaking the hands of guests who sang his songs word for word. Taye enthralled the audience, earning him an encore.
SK Sensation, president of FUMAN, ascended the stage with members of the Fuji Musicians Association of Nigeria as they recited the Fuman anthem. He also expressed how excited the association was to collaborate with Fuji: A Opera on this edition and reassured support for future Fuji Vibrations editions. He told the audience how Fuji: A Opera came to be and spoke highly of the organisers.
Sk Sensation, a true Fuji artist took to the stage and delivered a clinical performance that resonated with the crowd and elevated the atmosphere.
If Saheed Osupa was not a Fuji musician, he would have been a Fuji music teacher, teaching the delicacies and niceties of the Fuji music genre in queens English. King Saheed Osupa, a master lyricist, worshipper, poet, and an evident lover of his creator took the audience through a history class that explained his genre of music and position in the large family tree.
Malaika is a fantastic musician and performer in KS1. His command of his band demonstrated his command of arrangement and cadence. His success on TikTok and other social media platforms with the song Ose Olohon demonstrates his comfort with fame and long-term relevance.
Celebrity hype man, Do2Dtun introduced the Mayegun of Fuji Music, K1 De Ultimate as the night’s headliner and spoke about his efforts to keep the Fuji music genre alive.
The evening also marked the 50th anniversary of K1 De Ultimate performance on stage. Tosin Ashafa, executive producer of Fuji: A Opera, and Bobo Omotayo, Creator & Founder of Fuji: A Opera, presented K1 De Ultimate with an ‘ICON Award’ and expressed gratitude to the music legend for his unwavering support for Fuji: A Opera since its inception.
The night also saw K1 De Ultimate reaffirm his steadfast support for Fuji: A Opera and bestowed fatherly blessings on the organisers of the show. He prayed and assured the team of the support of past and present Fuji musicians.
Beginning with a smooth serenade and ending with a jive, K1 De Ultimate sang his anthems and performed soulful Fuji music with music alphabets that other acts had not explored.
“Fuji Vibrations served as a reminder that the Fuji genre is still shaping popular culture and truly represents the best of indigenous Nigerian music. Over 3,000 people gathered in the heart of Lagos to celebrate music and its fascinating subculture. But, more importantly, what we witnessed reminded us all that music can bring strangers together. These instances serve as reminders of Fuji’s ability to unite people “.
The night ended with Lagos vibrating in Fuchsia Pink Fuji prints created by guests in their own style and personality.
The visitors exited the park, chirping with anticipation of what the coming year would bring.
