Isiah Whitlock Jr., the veteran character actor best known for his role as the slippery Senator Clay Davis on The Wire, has died at the age of 71. His manager, Brian Liebman, confirmed that he passed away peacefully in New York on Tuesday after a brief illness.
Whitlock became a cult favourite thanks to his performance on HBO’s The Wire, where he played the endlessly corrupt Clay Davis. The role earned him a permanent place in TV history, largely because of Davis’s exaggerated, drawn-out catchphrase “sheeeeit”, a delivery Whitlock developed himself and later revealed was inspired by his uncle.
Over a career spanning decades, Whitlock was a frequent collaborator with director Spike Lee, appearing in several of his films, including BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods, where he played a Vietnam War veteran. He was also widely recognised for his comedic turn as Secretary of Defense George Maddox on Veep.
His film and television credits include appearances in Goodfellas, The Chappelle Show, and numerous stage productions, cementing his reputation as a dependable, scene-stealing presence.
Tributes have poured in following his death. Spike Lee described him as his “dear beloved brother,” while Liebman called him “a brilliant actor and an even better person.”
Born in South Bend, Indiana, Whitlock leaves behind a legacy defined by unforgettable performances and one of television’s most iconic catchphrases.
