As for Nigerian Hip-hop in 2012, upcoming rapper David Iye Odey aka Boogey clearly wins the rap rookie of the year. And we’ll tell you why…
At a point when Hip-Hop in Nigeria is on a serious decline (Yes, so far only two rap albums have been released – Reminisce‘s ‘Book of Rap Stories‘ and Jhybo‘s ‘Be Naa Ni‘ and less than a dozen mistapes) and nobody seems to be bothered, with rappers more concerned with searching for that Wizkid-esque hit single, Boogey’s music is a breath of fresh air.
The Cross River State-born rapper has in the last nine months dominated the Hip-hop community in his own way with constant cameo appearances on some of this year’s most popular projects.
How does one rapper receive co-sign’s from three heavyweight rappers – Terry tha Rapman, M.I and Modenine and get to feature on their mixtapes – ‘World Domination‘, ‘Illegal Music 2‘ and ‘Occupy The Throne‘?
Boogey’s journey into limelight has seen him always turn out champs – Last year he won the sixth Underground competition, and came second in Terry tha Rapman’s ‘Zombie‘ contest (we hear he didn’t win because his version was just too complex).
We’ll blame it on his exposure; the 26-year-old schooled in Morocco for five years where he graduated with a degree in Biology. ‘I had to learn how to read, speak and write French language, I got used to reading a lot and learning new words‘, Boogey says.
He’s back in Nigeria with a mixtape titled ‘Artificial Intelligence‘ with dreams of becoming the next best rapper out there; and he has no pressure from his folks at home nor his fans to drop that ‘hit single’ (at least for now).
