No, I don’t have a beef with Yvonne Jegede, I barely even know her. I don’t even know if she is an actress or a singer.
What I do know is that she is a celebrity with at least thousands of followers who hang on to her every word.
So when such a celebrity comes out to spread an idiotic statement, it must be rightly condemned for fear that her followers are not wiser than her would take it as the gospel truth.
Still don’t get what I am on about? Hold on.
Only yesterday, Yvonne posted a message on her Instagram a ridiculous idea that has been making the rounds on social media.
It is better quoted in its entirety to be believed.
‘I have bought airtime for almost a year now by dialing my phone because I thought the stress has been taken away. Honestly, this message just made me have a rethink. What stress could be more stressful than the fear of unemployment? I know the stress has been taken from a lot of us who hate to scratch cards to recharge but I believe this message will touch someone just as it did mines. #BuyFromRoadVendors’
Somehow this made sense to Yvonne and others who seemed to be in support of this.
But why stop there? Why only buy recharge cards from road vendors? Why not ask for loans from them? Or even financial advice?
Let us even take it even a few steps further. Why do we even need banks? Or factories? If we want to be Luddites, let us be Luddites.
After all, what matters is that we might have millions of people employed as street vendors. the other millions employed in banks and other financial institutions. They don’t matter. They can go to hell.
When you are popular, people will believe whatever you say. Which is why it is doubly important not be stupid as a celebrity. Which is why when you see things going horribly wrong in your nation, it is imperative, nay a responsibility to speak up and use your voice.
Which is why what 2face Idibia is planning to do with his protest march planned for February 6 should be applauded and not greeted with derision.
What is the use of power if you can use it for good instead of scare-mongering?
