The striker said this after Germany coach, Joachim Low reportedly told the 22-year old to show the world he is a better player than Messi after scoring the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final between Germany and Argentina.
Speaking with Bild magazine, Mario classified the words from his country’s head coach as motivation for him but admits the comparison to the Barcelona star forward is rather far-fetched.
‘I think [Low] only said that to motivate me. I came on late and he just found the right words to give me a push.
‘Messi has proven his extraordinary talent throughout his whole career with Barcelona. It’s not a comparison which should be made.
‘He’s achieved so many great things and set the bar so high that practically nobody is ever going to reach it.’
Mario Gotze came on as a substitute to score the only goal that ensured Germany won the 2014 World Cup trophy at the expense of Argentina in Brazil
