After losing out on the La Liga player of the year to Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi has also lost the Barcelona Player of the year award for 2013 – 2014 season to fellow Argentina player, Javier Mascherano.
The former Liverpool player, who was truly outstanding in his new Central defence role with the Catalan club, was awarded the ‘Memorial Aldo Rovira’ award on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, in Spain.
Speaking on the award Mascherano said: ‘I thank all of you who voted for me to receive this prize
We’ll try to continue doing things as well as we have until now, with the same dedication while trying to stay faithful to what a club like this demands, which is a lot.’
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi, who has won the award three times in the past, didn’t perform anywhere near the mounting expectations expected of him after injury reduced his impact in the 2013/2014 season.
