After weeks of waiting, ALAT by Wema Bank’s speed-eating competition, the ALAT Food Challenge, premiered on the digital bank’s Facebook and Instagram pages on Friday, August 6, 2021, and it had more than enough laughs to last a month.

ALAT, Nigeria’s first digital bank, has partnered with social media content creator, Ayo The Creator, for a competition that allows young challengers (who sign up on the ALAT app with the ‘SQUAD’ code) to compete for the prize of ₦100,000. Challengers are required to consume the largest portion of whatever meal is placed before them while a friend signs up on the ALAT app. Both have to finish their challenge within the five-minute time frame!
Williams Destiny, an entrepreneur and comedian, and his friend, Emu Oghenemaro, were the first team on the challenge. Their strategy was simple – E for energy all the way. While #TeamB had 20-year-old Mass communication undergraduate, Esther Fadipe and her friend, a designer, Oghenekevwe Osodi aka Kelsodi. Esther’s plan was to “go slow and steady.”
These four guys gave us the content that we signed up for and it was three minutes and 21 seconds of banter. Here are some of the things we liked.
1. The Food:
As a foodie, the sight of the platter of spicy turkey wings was all the encouragement needed to finish the episode. I was proud of the way both challengers dismantled the wings, bones and all. Kindly sign up for the next episode!
2. Money Trumps Training:
From the start, it looked like it was going to be an easy win for Destiny by the size of his bites. Two minutes into the competition, Esther realized one hundred thousand naira was at stake, and home training flew out of the window.
3. The Hype Men:
They might not have been on the hot seat, but Emu and Kelsodi were the best hype men as soon as they were done with their own tasks – signing up to the ALAT app within the five-minute time frame.
With such energetic friends cheering you on, you would feel on top of the world. However, Kelsodi was the highlight for me. He might have been an ‘assistant’, but he was a vibe! From cheering on his friend to consoling Emu after her team lost. Awwwwnnnn. He even grabbed a taste of the spicy hot wings to celebrate his partner.
4. A Queen Took The Crown:
How can one say this without appearing to gloat? Let’s put it this way, Team A’s Destiny walked off after losing the challenge. He was not too happy that he ‘lost to a woman’. His words, not mine.
Well, Esther’s game plan to eat slowly and block out distractions, paid off in the end. PS: We love a Queen who used turkey bones to celebrate her ₦100,000-win. We stan and took notes.
Well done Destiny, Emu, Esther and Kelsodi, it was a good one!
You can watch the first episode here. This Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 3:00 pm, the second episode of the series will drop on ALAT’s social media pages and it will be interesting to see the new challengers and who would bring us the drama this time around. Click here to watch the teaser.
You can still download the ALAT app and sign up using the referral code ‘SQUAD’ for a chance at becoming a challenger.
