Every Nigerian Idol season, we see contestants sing their heart out at the auditions. Still, only a handful gets the coveted golden ticket that takes them to the next stage.
This season’s judges come from different aspects of the music business, and they are looking for different things. Some contestants have been able to impress them, others not so much. But one thing is for sure: there is a certain standard that the Nigerian Idol judges are looking out for.
1. Vocal Talent Is A Must
Singing shows naturally require vocal talent, but many people don’t seem to know that. This season has seen voices that probably should have remained in the bathroom. Some auditions have had DJ Sose saying,’ This is not karaoke’. ‘You don’t have a voice that we are looking for’, Obi Asika told another contestant. It’s a singing show, and you must indeed know how to sing.
2. Own The Stage And Your Voice
It’s not enough to know how to sing; you have to carry yourself like a star. Some contestant brought enough charisma to wow judges, and others couldn’t light a candlestick. ‘You have a sweet talking voice, and it comes out in your singing voice. But your performance? Terrible’, singer Seyi Shay told a contestant who had delivered a lacklustre audition. Contestants need to perform their songs and captivate the judges.
3. Songs That Inspire
Song choice is crucial in auditioning. Some contestants had the judges questioning their song choice even before they performed. You need to pick a song that you can comfortably sing, even under pressure.
4. Let Your Personality Show
You can’t hope to wow the judges with the personality of dry bread. One thing that works is showing them a bit of who you are through your performance. It is what keeps them wanting more. One contestant gained a Golden ticket this way. ‘I like your swag’, Seyi Shay told her. ‘You’re my wildcard, so I’ll say yes.’
As the auditions continue, we look forward to seeing more Golden ticket winners who will impress the judges and have them wanting more. Nigerian Idol Season 6 auditions continue next week, Sunday, April 18, on DStv channel 151, 153 and 154 & GOtv channel 29 from 7 pm. Don’t miss out on all the excitement.
