Former Super Eagles of Nigeria and Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper, Wilfred Agbonavbare has been reported dead after enduring a long battle with cancer.
Just a week after some associates made his situation public and are trying to solicit funds for his treatment , the 48- year old passed away around 4am today, January 27, 2015 in a Spanish hospital according to reports by Spanish newspaper, Marca.
Reports state further that his former club, Rayo Vallecano contributed a sum totalling N4.5M to funds being raised for his treatment but unfortunately, the efforts could not save him.
Wilfred started his footballing journey with New Nigeria Bank in 1983 before moving to BBC Lions and later, Spain’s Rayo Vallecano.
He also turned out in the colours of Nigeria at the Under-20 team at the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship in Mexico and was a Super Eagles regular for years also. He was in the Super Eagles squad which triumphed at the 1994 African Cup of Nations hosted by Tunisia as well as the ’94 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
