Speaking with CNN sport today, Wednesday, January 28, 2015, the 42-year old criticised the current set up of the football governing and said he decided to take to contest in order to enforce changes in the football World.
‘If you search FIFA on the internet, you see the first word that comes out: ‘scandal.’ Not positive words. It’s that we have to change first and try to improve the image of FIFA. Football deserves much better than this.
‘I’ve been talking with so many important people in football – players, managers, president of federations — and they all think that something has to be done.’
‘Change in leadership, governance, transparency and solidarity, so I think it’s the moment for that.’
Luis Figo, who spent his playing days turning for various clubs in Europe, laced his boots for clubs like Sporting Lisbon, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
The former Portugal captain joins Sepp Blatter who is seeking a fifth term; former FIFA executive, Jerome Champagne; Jordan FA president, Ali Bin Al-Hussein; Dutch FA chairman, Michael van Praag and former France international, David Ginola for the election billed for May this year.
