A new format for penalty shoot-outs will be experimented in various English football league competitions this season.
The format will follow an ABBA style in which one team takes the first kick and is followed by the opposing team taking the next two spot kicks.
That is then followed by the first team taking two kicks and on it goes until a winner emerges.
This new format is a departure from the usual ABAB format, with officials stating the ABBA style would help ease pressure on the team taking the second penalty in a shoot-out.

The new system will be implemented in all ties in the Carabao Cup, Checkatrade Trophy and EFL play-offs.
It already has been used on trial basis by Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, in the Euro Women’s Under-17 in the Czech Republic back in May.
