26-year-old Ethiopian-Canadian singer, The Weeknd, admitted to The Guardian’s Tom Lamont in a recent interview of his drug usage while producing his songs. ‘When I had nothing to do but make music, it was very heavy. Drugs were a crutch for me.’
He disclosed that his new album Starboy was recorded with the help of weed and Hennesy. He further revealed that there were songs on his first record that were seven minutes long, where he rambled on whatever thoughts he was having when he was under the influence at the time.
The Weeknd currently charts all 18 songs from that album on the Billboard Hot 100. He becomes the second artiste to have all his tracks on the Billboard Hot 100 this year after Drake charted 20 tracks off his album in May.
Earlier this year, The Weeknd won two Grammy awards, including Best R&B Performance for his Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, ‘Earned It’.
In addition, he has earned two AMAs, eight Billboard Music Awards, nine Juno Awards, and 2017 Guinness World Records for ‘Most Consecutive Weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 by a Solo Male Artiste’.
