Claims of plagiarism are not exactly new in Nigerian music, there is one every other week. But this one is very different.
Usually, one artiste claims that another stole beats for his own or just lifted some lyrics for his benefit. However, in the case of Davido and General Pype, you can’t exactly see reason for plagiarism here.
The two songs with the same title sound exactly the same. It’s either that or one of the artistes is doing a very identical cover of the other’s song.
Listen to Davido’s version here and General Pype’s version here, and you’d agree with me.
Which raises the point that it is nigh impossible for artistes to produce two identical versions of the same song. Both done by the same producer, Shizzy. So why are they trying to fool us with the invented controversy?
Does General Pype need the controversy to stage a belated comeback? Or is Davido trying to do something to arrest the flagging reception to his EP?
Davido’s ‘Gbagbe Oshi’ was released only a couple of months ago as a single from his EP, Son Of Mercy; his first music offering since signing a record deal with Sony BMG.
The EP was met with very tepid reviews and it featured the Omo Baba Olowo singing over some EDM beats.
On the other hand, not much has been heard from dancehall artiste General Pype for years. Ever since ‘Champion’ was released in 2010, his career has stalled, leading to him taking a break from the industry.
Both Davido and General Pype need to stop playing around with the rumours of plagiarism. Nobody is buying it.
