In the aftermath of the 2011 Presidential elections held in Nigeria on Saturday, April 16, 2011, recent results (although not a final count) show that the incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan is already in a clear lead.
As final results are still being collated, disturbances have already begun in the Northern part of the country, most notably in Kaduna, Kano, Abuja and some parts in Borno and Yobe. Riots have lead to the death of many and loss of property: people have allegedly taken to the streets in what looks like a protest over the results of the elections that have emanated from these states.
Apparently, Goodluck Jonathan under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken the lead in some of the Northern states edging his main rival Rtd General Muhammadu Buhari, a Northerner with a pop star following across the north. Buhari, a former Military Head-of-State, is flying the flag of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
In the light of this, many who are not happy with this result have begun rioting in an attempt to show their dismay and disapproval of the elections.
Details as to what and who first started the violent protests remain scanty, but the pictures below tell a better story…
