A few weeks ago, award-winning singer Brymo was accused of rape by a Twitter user who shared screenshots of a story from his alleged victim.
The screenshots detailed how Brymo had allegedly raped her friend and reminded everyone about Uche Nelo’s 2018 accusations. The Twitter user who identified herself as Biliquis said, “This came directly from Brymo’s victim and when Uche Nelo called him out, y’all called her bitter. She then added, “Ask Brymo why he was dropped from Ake festival.”
The Nigerian law clearly defines a rapist as “Any person who has unlawful carnal knowledge of a woman or girl without her consent, if the consent is obtained by force or by means of threats or intimidation of any kind or by fear of harm, or by means of false and fraudulent representation as to the nature of the act.” If found guilty of rape under the law, the rapist faces sentencing up to life imprisonment.
Brymo has denied these accusations levelled against him and threatened legal actions. He said, “Is Rapist a new word for anyone doing something of note these days? Tell my accuser to come out and put a name and face to their claim, in the presence of the law or shut your stinking guts. Ask about me, I don’t shush when the word is out and I’m the target… no I won’t keep quiet, you marked the wrong guy…. and for the last time I’m no rapist, and it is libellous to call me one. The Lagos state government is in touch with my management and a full-scale investigation is currently being carried out… Libel!
If his accusers are proven to have laid false claims against him, they will face civil actions of slander, libel or defamation which are civil cases. This means that his accusers would only be asked to pay him damages and to possibly tender a public apology.
No lawsuits have officially been filed by either party but the case is still fiercely being discussed on social media.
