FIFA President, Sepp Blatter is set to resign as according to an ongoing announcement today, Tuesday, June 2 at a surprise press conference in Zurich just days after he was reelected for another term.
‘While I have a mandate from the membership of FIFA, I do not feel that I have a mandate from the entire world of football – the fans, the players, the clubs, the people who live, breathe and love football as much as we all do at FIFA,’ he said. ‘Therefore, I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress,’ Blatter was quoted as saying by BusinessInsider.
Further information available indicate that there will be an ‘extraordinary congress’ of FIFA to be announced where Blatter will step down from the position he has held since 1998 and a new president will be elected in his stead.
FIFA officials say this will take place sometime between December of 2015 and March 2016.
